Along with my pyrography and ink figurative drawings to show at Open Studios, I’ve started making cards. This mainly involves mainly burning pieces of paper with my wood-burning pen to create strange looking organic patterns, but it’s a refreshing break from my figurative work!
The cards below are ink drawings from when I sit in cafes drawing people walking past. It’s really good practice as I have a couple of seconds to capture their movement in just a few lines.

I have been featured in this month’s ‘Norfolk’ magazine (pg 180 & 181) about the upcoming Norfolk & Norwich Festival 2012 Open Studios (I’m top right, photographed in my studio using my wood-burning pen!), along with 5 other artists.
The article shows the fantastic variety of work that can be viewed. It’s a chance to meet artists in their studio, see their work and to talk in depth about what they do. Most artists work on their own – as one artist says, it is very isolating work, so we appreciate getting to talk to lots of people!

I like the idea of placing my figures in a circular position on the page. My idea is that the figures are going through a physical cycle, where the first figures starts off positioned kneeling but facing away, and then goes through a full movement, ending by kneeling but looking towards the viewer. It’s as if she’s started off as closed off from the world, but ends up able to face it. I really enjoy exploring this theme in my work.

I have been working on new work for the upcoming Open Studios, as part of the 2012 Norfolk & Norwich Festival www.nnfestival.org.uk/openstudios. My studio will be open to the public on Sat 26th & Sun 27th May, Sat 2nd & Sun 3rd June, Sat 9th & Sun 10th June – come along, say hi and see my work – Studio 4, Muspole Workshops, just off Duke St. I’ll have a big selection of work on show, from my usual pyrography figurative drawings, cards, pencil and ink drawings and pyrography drawings on wood. I can’t wait to see my studio bursting with artwork! I’ve just finished off two drawings, they are now ready to be framed. Unfortunately the drawings don’t photograph very well, so I’ve included close up photographs of each. The wood-burning pen can sometimes make the paper go shiny in some of the lines. In parts of the line, it can be almost black and then fades into an almost pearlescent effect.

One of my wood-burn figurative drawings has been selected for the Society of Women Artist 151st Annual Exhibition in London. The society’s patron, HRH Princess Michael of Kent, will open the exhibition and present the Awards at the Private View on Wednesday 27th June. The exhibition will then run from Thursday 28th June to Saturday 7th July 2012 (10am to 5pm, entry charge). See www.society-women-artists.org.uk for details. If you are in London and get a chance to go, please do check it out. I am so excited about this, it will be my first exhibition out of Norfolk, and a great chance to show my work off!

Tonight was the private view for the Norfolk & Norwich Festival Open Studios at the Forum in Norwich. The atrium was packed full of some beautiful work – paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures – something for everyone! It was great to see lots of the artists taking part in Open Studios there. The exhibition is to give people a taste of what is to follow in the main open studios. If you get a chance to go along, have a look – the exhibition is on until 26th April. Open Studios is running alongside the main Norfolk & Norwich festival 26th May – 10th June – http://www.norfolkopenstudios.org.uk/
